Exclusive interview with Mavie Marcos from Andain

She’s the voice behind tracks like “Summer Calling”, “Beautiful Things” and “Promises”. And together with DJ/Producer Josh Gabriel she recently released her first album “You Once Told Me” on the globally leading Black Hole recordings. Her name? Mavie Marcos, the singer/songwriter of Andain.

We had the chance to ask Mavie a few questions! And we are really glad Mavie Marcos found some time in her busy schedule to answer them:

Hi Mavie, How are you?
I’m great.  Sitting on my couch with my laptop and drinking coffee.

Can you describe your role during the production of the album “You Once Told Me”?
I wrote and produced the songs with Josh.

How would you describe the style of Andain?
melodic electronica

What was the hardest part of producing this album?
really deciding once and for all the particular feel and tone of a track.

The album contains many emotional lyrics. What is your biggest inspiration?
All the good parts and bad parts about all the different ways to love what’s in your life.

At what point did realize that you could make a sustainable career in the music industry?
Is that now? 😉   A career in music is hard to sustain for many reasons.  I’m not sure I’ll ever feel totally secure in it.  At the same time,  I don’t feel I need to hold on to things or be in control as much as I used to. Control-over-one’s-life is a bit of an illusion I find.  I’m fine taking it as it comes.  I love where I am right now and I’m excited to see things develop.

What is the most memorable moment of your musical career?
I think it happened the first time I signed posters after an Andain show.  I was in Asia and the fans were lined up waiting to ask me questions and such.  So many fans were so effusive with their love and support of our music.  It made me feel like we really meant something and were onto something special.

Which track on “You Once Told Me” is your personal favorite and why?
They’ve all been my favorite and some point during the writing process.  I go back and forth.  Current favorite is “After.”  I love every part of it.

If you could perform at any place in the world, where would it be?
I’d love to do a technologically and visually unique event at Burning Man that somehow involved audience participation.

What’s the last book you read?
“Republic Lost” by Lawrence Lessig. In general it’s about how special interests in the U.S. funnel huge amounts of money to influence our government and how that affects the virility of our democracy.  It’s not pro any one political group.  It’s mostly about becoming an aware and thoughtful citizen.

If someone would make a movie about your life, what must be in it?
My state of play

What can we expect from you in the near future?
More songs 🙂
